A Torah Returns Home to Israel

Parashat Lech-Lecha · לֶךְ־לְךָ

On October 19, 2026, this Sefer Torah completed its journey from Miami to its new home at Chabad on the Coast in Tel Aviv, Israel. Just five days later, it was opened to Parashat Lech-Lecha, meaning “Go Forth.” In this portion, God calls Abraham to leave his homeland and journey to the Land of Israel. Genesis 12:1–3 | God’s Promise to Abraham “Go forth from your land, from your birthplace and from your father’s house, to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great, and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse. Through you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” ✨ The Connection Written in Tzfat, Israel, this Torah traveled to Miami, where it served the Jewish community for nearly three years before returning to Israel. Just as Abraham answered God’s call to journey to the Promised Land, this Torah has made its own journey home. A Torah written in Israel, carried across the world, and returned to the land where the Jewish people’s story began. Every Torah has a story. This is part of yours.

Short, meaningful Torah learning

סופר סת״ם

What does a Sofer do?

A Sofer is a trained scribe who writes a Torah by hand on parchment from a kosher animal, using a quill and special ink. Every one of the roughly 304,805 letters must be formed precisely; a single missing or malformed letter can invalidate the scroll until it is corrected. Writing a complete Torah typically takes about a year of focused work.

תרי״ג מצוות

Why 613 partners?

Jewish tradition counts 613 mitzvot (commandments) in the Torah. Our 613-partner model is a symbolic framework that echoes this number, it does not assign a mitzvah, a letter or any part of the sacred text to a partner. The gematria of the Hebrew word for the number, תרי״ג, is itself 613.

הכנסת ספר תורה

Hachnasat Sefer Torah

When a new Torah is completed, the community celebrates its arrival with a Hachnasat Sefer Torah, a joyful procession, often under a chuppah, with singing and dancing, as the Torah is welcomed into its new home in the ark.

גימטריא

Gematria, the numbers in names

Each Hebrew letter carries a numerical value: Alef is 1, Yud is 10, Kuf is 100, and so on to Tav at 400. Adding the values of a word's letters gives its gematria. For centuries, scholars have used gematria as one way to notice connections between words and ideas.
